Part 1
Repair or replace
How do I know if I need a repair or a whole new roof?
Rough rule: if the damage is localized and the roof is well inside its service life, repair it. If the shingles are brittle and losing granules across the whole roof, or you're patching a third leak in two years, you're spending money on a roof that's telling you it's finished. A good estimator will show you photos and let you make that call.
How long does a roof last in Texas?
Texas is hard on roofing — UV, heat, and hail all shorten a roof's life compared to the number on the wrapper. Architectural asphalt shingles commonly give you a couple of decades here, less in a hail-heavy year, more with good attic ventilation. Ventilation is the variable most people never think about.
Can you put a new roof over the old one?
Sometimes it's legal, and we generally don't recommend it. A layover hides whatever's wrong with the decking, adds weight, runs hotter, and usually shortens the life of the new shingles. It also makes the next roof more expensive to remove.
My roof isn't leaking. Can it still be damaged?
Absolutely, and this is the one that catches people. Hail knocks the granules off the shingle surface and bruises the mat underneath. The roof keeps water out for a while, then fails early — often after the window to claim that storm has closed.
Part 2
Cost and payment
What drives the price of a roof?
Size and pitch first — a steep roof needs more safety equipment and slows everything down. Then the number of layers to tear off, how much decking has to be replaced once it's open, the number of penetrations and valleys, the shingle line you choose, and any code-required upgrades. That's why an honest number requires someone actually looking at the roof.
Why won't you quote a price over the phone?
Because a phone number is a guess, and a guess that's low gets revised upward on install day — which is exactly the experience everybody hates. We'd rather spend an hour on your roof and hand you a number that holds.
Is the inspection really free?
Yes. We'll walk the roof, document what we find, and tell you what we think — including 'this roof is fine, call us in five years,' which is an answer we give regularly.
Do you offer financing?
Ask us when we're out — we'll walk you through the current options for your project.
Part 3
Insurance and storms
Will you handle my insurance claim for me?
No, and be wary of anyone who says they will. In Texas, negotiating or adjusting a claim on your behalf requires a public adjuster licence, and your roofer can't hold both roles on the same property. What we do: inspect, photograph, write a detailed estimate, meet your adjuster at the house, and document anything that was missed so you can send it to your carrier.
Do I have to pay my deductible?
Yes. Texas law requires it and prohibits a contractor from paying, waiving, or rebating it. Anyone offering to make your deductible disappear is describing fraud.
Should I get an inspection before I file a claim?
We think so. Filing on a roof that turns out to be undamaged can still land on your claims record, and going in knowing what's actually up there puts you on much firmer ground.
Part 4
Working with us
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes, and you should ask every contractor for proof rather than taking the answer at face value. Ask for the certificate directly from the insurer, and ask specifically whether the people physically on your roof are covered.
How soon can you get out here?
Call the office nearest you and we'll give you a real date on the phone. Active leaks jump the queue — say 'active leak' when you call.
What warranty comes with the roof?
Two separate things, and they're often confused: the manufacturer warrants the materials, and the roofer warrants the workmanship — the installation itself. Ask any contractor for both in writing, and note that manufacturer coverage generally depends on the roof being installed to their spec.
Do you work outside Texas?
Texas is our service area. Call the nearest office and we'll tell you honestly whether your address is one we cover well.
Still have questions?
Ask us on the roof.
The inspection is free and it's the fastest way to turn a general question into a specific answer about your house.
